Our Journey is Fleming County Schools’ district-wide newsletter, shared weekly with students, teachers, staff, parents, and guardians. It serves as a clear and consistent line of communication that keeps our school community informed, connected, and aligned. Our Journey helps create a shared understanding of where we are, where we are headed, and why the work matters. |

Context: Pictured are five Fleming County High School band members who recently participated in the 67th Annual Morehead State University Honor Band Clinic. Students were selected through a competitive audition process that required them to submit recordings demonstrating their musical ability and preparation. The clinic began on Thursday, February 12, and concluded with a final concert on the evening of February 14. In just two and a half days, students worked alongside guest conductors from universities across the region to prepare and perform a full concert program of music they had never played before, an experience that required focus, collaboration, and high-level musicianship. Representing FCHS from left to right are Ben Earlywine, Campbell Dotson, Michael Coleman, Isabella Rowe, and Blake Bradley.

Dear Fleming Countians,
One of the priorities we continue to focus on across Fleming County Schools is ensuring that every student can demonstrate clear evidence of learning at their grade level. While grades and scores provide some information, they do not always capture the full picture of a student’s progress. What matters most is whether students can show what they know, apply what they have learned, and communicate their thinking with confidence. When students can demonstrate grade-level expectations through authentic work and experiences, they begin to see themselves as capable learners who are growing and improving over time. This confidence is built through practice, feedback, effort, and opportunities to refine their work. Our goal is not perfection, but progress that moves students forward. Grade-level evidence helps us see that progress clearly and support students where they need it most.
Think about learning any important life skill. Whether it is learning to drive, playing an instrument, or developing a trade, progress becomes visible when someone can actually demonstrate what they can do. The same is true for learning in school. Students must move beyond completing assignments to showing evidence of growth, mastery, and readiness. Across our district, students in grades 3 through 12 are building this evidence through their BRIDGE Performance Indicator portfolios (the BPI website), Writing Across Content (WAC) portfolios, various projects, presentations, and performance-based tasks connected to real-life learning. These opportunities allow students to demonstrate communication, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and academic progress in meaningful ways. When students can explain their learning and show how they have improved, the learning becomes more powerful. They begin to understand that effort and persistence lead to growth.
This school year, Friday, March 27, 2026, is an important date for students to have their BPI website up to date and have included their grade-level evidence within their portfolios. This date is not about pressure or compliance. It is about providing a clear checkpoint for students, teachers, and families to see progress before the end of the school year. It allows time for feedback, improvement, and continued growth. Our teachers are working closely with students to support this process, providing guidance and opportunities to strengthen their work. This type of learning requires intentional planning and dedication, and I am grateful for the commitment our teachers demonstrate every day. Their efforts are helping students build both skills and confidence.
Families and our community play an important role as partners in this work. Encouraging students to talk about what they are learning, share their progress, and reflect on their growth can make a meaningful difference. When students know that effort, improvement, and persistence are valued, they are more willing to take on challenges and continue growing. Our goal remains clear. We want every student to graduate ready for the next step in life, with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed. Grade-level evidence helps ensure that readiness is real and visible.
Our Journey Continues…

In Fleming County, every graduate leaves footprints here. Over time, those footprints become the path that guides the students who follow. |

In Fleming County Schools, End-of-Year (EoY) Presentations of Learning are authentic, student-driven exhibitions that showcase a student’s growth, mastery, and readiness. They serve as a culminating reflection of the learning journey across the school year. These presentations extend far beyond traditional final exams or year-end reviews. Instead, they are meaningful, public demonstrations of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions students have developed, aligned to the district’s Portrait of a Learner and the BRIDGE Performance Indicators (BPIs).
